Report: Mavs unlikely to trade away 'gift' of No. 1 pickNew Foto - Report: Mavs unlikely to trade away 'gift' of No. 1 pick

Having beaten long odds to win the top pick in next month's NBA draft -- and blessed with an obvious candidate to become the No. 1 selection -- the Dallas Mavericks reportedly aren't planning to use it as a trade chip. The Mavericks have their sights set on 18-year-old forward Cooper Flagg, who led Duke to the Final Four in his only season with the Blue Devils, as ESPN on Tuesday cited sources that indicated Dallas isn't interested in trading the pick. Patrick Dumont, the Mavericks' representative on the NBA's Board of Governors, appears to have the final say on personnel matters, sources said, and he looks upon the 6-foot-8 Flagg, who piled up numerous awards at Duke, as a "gift." If Flagg's prowess and promise weren't enough of a lure for the franchise - especially general manager Nico Harrison -- that traded away superstar Luke Doncic, Dallas no longer controls its first-round draft selections from 2027-30. That draft capital went toward building the roster that advanced to the 2024 NBA Finals. Flagg, a first-team All-American, also won the Wooden Award as the nation's top collegiate player and the Associated Press' national player of the year. At Duke, he averaged 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game. He shot 48.1 percent from the floor, including 38.5 percent on 3-pointers. Said Mavericks CEO Rick Welts of Flagg: "I don't know who we're going to take, but should we take him, I think his résumé is pretty strong. Every time he's put in a situation that everyone wondered if he could succeed, he's succeeded and then some." Dallas had just a 1.8 percent chance to win the top pick during the NBA's draft lottery, which was conducted on Monday. The draft will be held June 25-26 in New York. --Field Level Media

Pacers escape 19-point hole, KO Cavaliers in Game 5New Foto - Pacers escape 19-point hole, KO Cavaliers in Game 5

Tyrese Haliburton scored 31 points and dished out eight assists as the Indiana Pacers eliminated the host Cleveland Cavaliers with a 114-105 decision in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference semifinals on Tuesday. Pascal Siakam put up 21 points for fourth-seeded Indiana, which overcame a 19-point point deficit while closing out the best-of-seven series. "We're talking about eight more wins for an NBA championship," Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said. "The league is wide open this year. We've just got to keep believing." Indiana has qualified for back-to-back trips to the Eastern finals for the first time since 2013-2014, when it lost to the Miami Heat twice. The Pacers were beaten by the eventual champion Boston Celtics last season. "We're happy to go to the conference finals, but we want the whole thing this year," Indiana's Myles Turner said. Donovan Mitchell posted 35 points and nine rebounds while playing with a sprained left ankle and sore calf for top-seeded Cleveland, which lost all three home games in the series. Evan Mobley added 24 points and 11 rebounds but a team that went 64-18 in the regular season was sent home. "They were the better team. They deserved it and played great," Cleveland coach Kenny Atkinson said. "They wore us down. I thought we were built for it, but we weren't ready for that. "The season was not a success in terms of where our goal was. Success would be going to the conference finals, but we didn't do that. Quite honestly, I expected more coming off the Miami series (a four-game sweep). Now, we've got to figure out the next piece." After the Cavaliers went up 44-25 early in the second quarter, Haliburton scored 22 points and drained six 3-pointers during an epic 55-24 burst that put the Pacers up 80-68 with 1:50 remaining in the third. Cleveland got as close as 98-97 with 5:03 left in the fourth on a Mitchell 3-pointer, but Andrew Nembhard answered with a 3-pointer and Haliburton made a three-point play. Haliburton wound up 10 of 15 from the field, including 6 of 10 on 3-point attempts. Nembhard finished with 18 points and six assists, Aaron Nesmith collected 13 points and 13 rebounds, and Turner had 10 points and four blocked shots for Indiana. The Pacers held the Cavaliers to a 9-of-35 shooting (25.7 percent) from beyond the arc. "We had a lot of confidence in what we did last year, even though a lot of people didn't," Haliburton said of again reaching the conference finals. Cleveland All-Star guard Darius Garland had 11 points on 4-of-16 shooting and Max Strus missed all nine of his field-goal attempts. They combined to miss all 12 of their 3-point tries while committing eight fouls. Mitchell was aggressive from the tip, scoring 13 points and making 7 of 8 free throws as the Cavaliers went up 31-19 after the first. Haliburton sank five 3-pointers in a 27-12 run to end the first half, bringing the Pacers within 56-52. Haliburton had 17 points at the break, while Mitchell topped Cleveland with 16. "If we got one when we were up 20 (in Game 2), the series looks a lot different," Mobley said, referencing a 120-119 home loss. "You have to win the ones you can, and when you're up 20, these are the ones you have to win. "We didn't start out the best in Game 1, then we got hurt and everything went downhill. We've got to be mentally stronger from the jump." Mitchell added, "We just didn't get the job done. Nothing else needs to be said. "We let the city down. We let each other down. I believe in this team. That's what just sucks. We're a good team, but ultimately for three (home) games, we don't seem it." --Field Level Media

Mikael Granlund's hat trick leads Stars to 3-1 edge on JetsNew Foto - Mikael Granlund's hat trick leads Stars to 3-1 edge on Jets

Mikael Granlund netted his first career playoff hat trick to pace Dallas to a 3-1 victory over the visiting Winnipeg Jets on Tuesday, leaving the Stars one win away from advancing to the final four of the Stanley Cup playoffs. Goaltender Jake Oettinger made 31 saves in a sparkling performance for the Stars, who lead the best-of-seven Western Conference semifinal series 3-1. Dallas, which is on the verge of reaching the conference finals for the third consecutive season, will try to close out the set on Thursday in Winnipeg. Nikolaj Ehlers scored for the Jets, who finished atop the league standings in the regular season but find themselves on the brink of elimination. Goalie Connor Hellebuyck stopped 21 shots. Winnipeg has lost all five of its road playoff games this spring, and the Jets have dropped nine consecutive playoff outings away from home over the past three years. Granlund netted a power-play goal 8:36 into the game to open the scoring. The veteran forward worked to the high slot and while using a defender for a screen and fired a long shot that eluded Hellebuyck. Ehlers pulled the Jets even 62 seconds into the second period with his third goal in the past three games. Two seconds after a Winnipeg power play expired, Ehlers found the mark with a sharp-angled offering. Granlund put the Stars ahead for good at 17:52 of the middle frame when he buried a short-side shot while participating in a two-on-one rush up the ice. Granlund netted his third of the game at 7:23 of the third period, moments after Oettinger denied a Kyle Connor short-handed breakaway. During a four-minute power play, Granlund unloaded a one-timer from the right circle, which brought a flurry of hats from the stands. Winnipeg's best chance to mount a comeback came during a late power play, but the Jets failed to convert for the third time in the game with the man advantage. They have scored only once with 16 power-play opportunities in the series. The Jets did create a bevy of opportunities in the waning minutes, but Oettinger shut the door. --Field Level Media

Mikael Granlund gets 1st career playoff hat trick as Stars beat top-seeded Jets for 3-1 series leadNew Foto - Mikael Granlund gets 1st career playoff hat trick as Stars beat top-seeded Jets for 3-1 series lead

DALLAS (AP) — Mikael Granlund had his first career playoff hat trick, Jake Oettinger stopped 31 shots and the Dallas Stars beat Winnipeg 3-1 on Tuesday night, taking a 3-1 series lead over the top-seeded Jets in the second round of the Western Conference playoffs. Mikko Rantanen uppedhis NHL-leading playoff totalto 19 points (nine goals) with the primary assist on Granlund's second goal that broke a 1-1 tie with 2:08 left in the second period and put the Stars ahead to stay. Granlund did a double fist pump from his knees, then popped up to his skates after his third goal, his fourth in these playoffs, on a power play with 12:37 left in the game. The 33-year-old forward had scored multiple goals only one time in his previous 69 playoff games, for Minnesota in 2014. Game 5 is at Winnipeg on Thursday, when the Stars will have their first chance to advance to the West final for the third year in a row. Nikolaj Ehlers scored for the Jets, who have lost all five of their road games this postseason. The primary assist on the third Granlund goal came from Miro Heiskanen, the standout defenseman in the lineupfor the first time since Jan. 28 after missing the last 32 regular-season games and first 10 playoff games because of a knee injury. That came soon after Oettinger's kick save on Kyle Connor's short-handed attempt in the first half of a double-minor penalty against Haydn Fleury. Granlund scored just before the end of the four-minute penalty. Granlund got his first goal after skating down the middle over both blue lines, and a nifty move around Brandon Tanev near mid-ice, before snapping a 38-foot shot past Connor Hellebuyck for a 1-0 lead just 8 1/2 minutes into the game. Hellebuyck has now lost nine consecutive playoff road games since winning Game 1 at Vegas in 2023, before the Golden Knights won four in a row. The two-time Vezina Trophy winner, the odds-on favorite to win the top goalie award again this season, has allowed 24 goals in the five road losses in these playoffs. The Jets began the second period with a minute left on a power play and Dallas technically killed the tripping penalty. But Ehlers scored from a severe angle, his shot from the bottom of the circle to left of Oettinger going under the goalie's legs and ricocheting into the net while Tyler Seguin was coming out of the box. ___ AP NHL playoffs:https://apnews.com/hub/stanley-cupandhttps://apnews.com/hub/nhl

Celtics star Jayson Tatum ruled out for rest of postseason after suffering torn Achilles in loss to KnicksNew Foto - Celtics star Jayson Tatum ruled out for rest of postseason after suffering torn Achilles in loss to Knicks

Jayson Tatum's postseason is over. TheBoston Celticsstar was ruled out for the rest of the playoffs with a torn right Achilles tendon, the team announced. Tatum underwent surgery Tuesday, less than 24 hours after he initially sustained the injury. A timeline for his return is not yet known, but he is expected to make a full recovery. The decision to operate immediately, according to theBoston Globe's Adam Himmelscbach, was done because it can lead to a more favorable outcome. Tatum went down in the final minutes of theCeltics' 121-113 loss to the New York Knicks in Game 4of their Eastern Conference semifinals series on Monday night at Madison Square Garden. Tatum planted near the top of the arc while trying to chase after a loose ball, but his right ankle awkwardly rolled out and he went crashing down to the court. He averaged 25 points and 11.8 rebounds per game throughout the series. Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla called it a "lower body injury" after the game, but did not have any specifics. An MRI on Tuesday morning confirmed the Achilles injury. "I mean, the loss is the loss," Celticsveteran Al Horford saidafter the game. "More importantly, you know, it's Jayson and that's what I'm worried about. And I'm just making sure I'm there for him. That's my priority ... It's very concerning, just from, you know, the care that I have for him. What he means to us. What he means to Boston." While the Celtics will be without Tatum for the rest of the postseason, Tatum will now almost certainly miss a good chunk of next season while he recovers. Achilles injuries can typically take several months, if not longer, to recover from. Tatum finished the regular season averaging 26.8 points, 8.7 rebounds and 6 assists per game. The 26-year-old signed a five-year, $315 million supermax extension last summer after he helped lead the Celtics to an NBA title. The Knicks currently hold a 3-1 lead in their series over the Celtics. Game 5 is set for Wednesday night at TD Garden in Boston. If the Knicks pull off the win, they'll earn their first trip to the Eastern Conference finals since 1999.
