French Open 2025: Tommy Paul becomes first American men's player to reach quarterfinals since 2003New Foto - French Open 2025: Tommy Paul becomes first American men's player to reach quarterfinals since 2003

Tommy Paul became the first American men's tennis player to advance to the French Open quarterfinals in 22 years with a straight-set victory over Alexei Popyrin, 6-3, 6-3, 6-3. The No. 12 seed needed five sets to defeat Márton Fucsovics in the second round andKaren Khachanov in the third. Meanwhile, Popyrin, No. 25 in the draw, hadn't lost a set in his first three matches of this tournament. So a relatively easy fourth-round win for Paul was a surprise. Popyrin took an early advantage, breaking Paul's serve to win the first game. However, Paul quickly shook off that slow start to recover and take control of the match with a 5-3 lead. Popyrin looked as if he might rally after taking an 0-40 lead in the next game. But Paul bounced back to win the next three points, getting to nearly every return and landing difficult shots to win that first set. The Australian also helped Paul get through the three sets rather quickly by beating himself, committing 37 unforced errors during the match. At several points, Popyrin turned to his coaches box to look for answers. Or to vent frustration at his mistakes. (His previous three matches lasted a total of nearly 11 hours.) "I am very happy to get a straight sets win," he said, via USA Today. "I have been playing some very long matches so that felt really good. Shorter matches like this help a lot." The last American men's player to get past the fourth round at Roland-Garros was Andre Agassi in 2003, who entered the round of 16 by defeating Flávio Saretta. In the quarterfinals, Agassi lost to Guillermo Coria in four sets. Paul will face the winner between fellow American Ben Shelton and Carlos Alcaraz in the quarterfinals on Tuesday. If Shelton were to win and Frances Tiafoe excels later in Day 8, the U.S. could have multiple players in the quarters for the first time since Jim Courier and Pete Sampras did so in 1996.

ROME (AP) — British rider Simon Yates cruised to overall victory in theGiro d'Italiaon Sunday — finally winning the race that had eluded him so often. After attacking on the gravel-road climbto take the pink jersey in the penultimate stage on Saturday, Yates finished nearly four minutes ahead of runner-upIsaac Del Toro, the 21-year-old Mexican who wore pink for 10 days before Yates took control. It's the second Grand Tour title for Yates after he won the Spanish Vuelta in 2018. Yates wore pink for 13 days during the 2018 Giro before cracking on one of the final climbs. He also had to withdraw from the Italian race in 2020 and 2022 — because of coronavirus and a knee injury, respectively. "I'm still in shock of what I've done," Yates said. "It's something that I've been working toward for a long time." Yates, who rides for Team Visma Lease a Bike, finished 3 minutes, 56 seconds ahead of Del Toro and 4:43 ahead of Richard Carapaz, the 2019 champion from Ecuador. Dutch rider Olav Kooij, Yates' teammate, won the final stage in a sprint finish. During the non-competitive neutralized period just before the mostly ceremonial final stage actually began, the peloton passed through the Vatican and was blessed by Pope Leo XIV. The 143-kilometer (89-mile) final stage concluded with a circuit of eight laps through downtown Rome and finished next to the Circus Maximus. At age 32, Yates already acknowledged that this victory is "the peak" of his career. His best finish in the Tour de France was fourth in 2023. Twin brothers Yates and his twin brother, Adam, have long been among the peloton's elite. Adam Yates rode this Giro for UAE Team Emirates as a support rider for Del Toro — so was competing against his brother. But the brothers posed arm-in-arm for photos together during the final stage. Before the final stage started, a moment of silence was observed following the death of former Visma rider Robert Gesink's wife. Del Toro top young rider Del Toro finished with the white jersey for the top young rider. Despite his tactical mistakes on Saturday, Del Toro appears to have a promising career ahead of him. This was just his second Grand Tour after placing 36th in the Vuelta last year. "I'm learning," Del Toro said. "I should be happy with myself." Danish rider Mads Pedersen took the maroon jersey for points after winning four stages. Lorenzo Fortunato of Italy took the blue jersey for the mountain classification. ___ AP cycling:https://apnews.com/hub/cycling

French Open: Carlos Alcaraz shows sportsmanship by conceding a point to Ben SheltonNew Foto - French Open: Carlos Alcaraz shows sportsmanship by conceding a point to Ben Shelton

PARIS (AP) —Carlos Alcarazcalled himself for breaking the rules at theFrench Openand conceded a point toBen Sheltonon Sunday. Early in the second set of their fourth-round match, Shelton whipped a passing shot well out of Alcaraz's reach up at the net. So Alcaraz, the defending champion at Roland-Garros, flung his racket — and, as his equipment flipped through the air, its strings somehow not only made contact with the ball but sent it back over the net and onto the other side of the court. Initially, the second-seeded Alcaraz was awarded the point. But he immediately went over to the chair umpire to admit that he wasn't holding his racket when it touched the ball. That's not allowed, so the point went to Shelton, an American seeded 13th. When the official informed the Court Philippe-Chatrier crowd what had happened, Alcaraz was given a round of applause. Making the moment possibly critical, instead of leading 40-30 on his serve, Alcaraz was now down 30-40, giving Shelton his first break point of the match. But Alcaraz saved that one — and five others in that game — along the way to taking a two-set lead in the best-of-five match. ___ More AP tennis:https://apnews.com/hub/tennis

Girls' track and field athletes don't stand on podium next to trans athlete at Oregon state championshipNew Foto - Girls' track and field athletes don't stand on podium next to trans athlete at Oregon state championship

A pair of girls' track and field athletes did not stand on the medal podium alongside a transgender athlete for high jump at theOregon statechampionship on Saturday night. Footage obtained by Fox News Digital showed the twohigh schoolseniors, Reese Eckard of Sherwood High School and Alexa Anderson of Tigard High School, step down from their respective spots on the podium next to a trans athlete who represented Ida B. Wells High School. Click Here For More Sports Coverage On Foxnews.com Eckard, in fourth place, and Anderson, in third, each finished ahead of the trans athlete, who tied for fifth place. But the two females faced the opposite direction as the other competitors received their medals from officials. The footage then showed an official confront the two young women, and gesture for them to move away. Eckard and Anderson were then seen walking away from the podium and standing off to the side. Fox News Digital has reached out to the Oregon School Activities Association for a response. Read On The Fox News App The trans athlete previously competed in the boys' category in 2023 and 2024, Fox News Digitalpreviously reported. Eckard and Anderson were praised for not standing on the podium on social media, and were even shouted out by prominent conservative activist Riley Gaines. California Town Rallies Behind Trump As It Hosts Track And Field Championship Amid Trans Athlete Controversy "We didn't refuse to stand on the podium out of hate. We did it because someone has to say this isn't right. In order to protect the integrity and fairness of girls sports we must stand up for what is right," Anderson said in a statement to Fox News Digital. Girls and women making symbolic gestures to protest trans inclusion in sports has become a growing trend in 2025. On May 17 at a California track and field sectional final,Reese Hoganof Crean Lutheran High School stepped from the second-place spot onto the first-place medal podium after her trans opponent, AB Hernandez stepped down from it. Hogan's stunt was lauded on social media by Gaines and others. On April 2, footage of women's fencerStephanie Turnerkneeling to protest a trans opponent at a competition in Maryland, and subsequently getting punished for it, went viral and ignited global awareness and scrutiny against USA Fencing. Oregon is one of many Democratic-controlled states that saw transgender athletes compete in girls' track and field championships this weekend, with other highly-publicized incidents taking place in California, Washington, Maine and Minnesota. The America First Policy Institute (AFPI), a nonpartisan research institute, filed a Title IXdiscrimination complaintagainst Oregon for its laws that allow biological males to compete in girls' sports on May 27. The complaint was filed to the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Civil Rights, which has already launched Title IX investigations against the high school sports leagues in California, Minnesota, Maine and Massachusetts. "Every girl deserves a fair shot – on the field, on the podium, and in life," said Jessica Hart Steinmann, AFPI's executive general counsel and vice chair of the Center for Litigation, in a statement. "When state institutions knowingly force young women to compete against biological males, they're violating federal law and sending a devastating message to female athletes across the country." PresidentDonald Trumpsigned the "Keeping Men Out of Women's Sports" executive order on Feb. 5 and his administration has made combating the continued enabling of trans athletes in girls' sports by Democratic states a priority. The U.S. Department of Justice has already launched a lawsuit against Maine for its defiance of Trump's executive order, and the president suggested on Tuesday that federal funding pauses could be coming against California amid the situation involving Hernandez.
