Formula 1: George Russell says late-race contact from Max Verstappen 'felt very deliberate'New Foto - Formula 1: George Russell says late-race contact from Max Verstappen 'felt very deliberate'

Did Max Verstappen purposely run into George Russell near the end of the Spanish Grand Prix? The Mercedes driver certainly feels that way. Verstappen and Russell made contact as Russell went for a pass on Verstappen for fourth late in the race won by Oscar Piastri. The two drivers had been racing hard for the position and Verstappen's Red Bull team had told him to let Russell past to avoid a potential penalty. Drama in the closing stages of the race! 😱Max Verstappen drops to P10 following a 10-second penalty for causing a collision with George Russell#F1#SpanishGPpic.twitter.com/anhkyJ92pk — Formula 1 (@F1)June 1, 2025 A safety car for Russell's teammate Kimi Antonelli sent the cars at the front of the field to pit lane for fresh tires. Russell and most of the other frontrunners pitted for soft tires. Verstappen only had hard tires remaining. Those tires are more durable, but are slower at the start of a run and have less grip. "It felt very deliberate, to be honest,"Russell said via ESPN.""It's something that I've seen numerous times in sim racing and on iRacing. Never have I seen it in a Formula 1 race. So that was something new. "It's a bit of a shame because Max is clearly one of the best drivers in the world. But manoeuvres like that are just totally unnecessary and sort of lets him down. It's a shame for all the young kids looking up, aspiring to be Formula 1 drivers. "So, as I said, I don't know what he was thinking. In the end, I'm not going to lose sleep over it because I ultimately benefited from those antics." Verstappen wasn't too keen on talking about it after the race. The two drivers are not exactly on the best of terms. And that was a statement that would have been true before Sunday's race. Two takes on the incident from George and Max ⬇️#F1#SpanishGPpic.twitter.com/h5kDPqWSKE — Formula 1 (@F1)June 1, 2025 Verstappen was handed a 10-second penalty for the incident and finished 10th. He was also given a three-point penalty on his superlicense and now has 11 points. One more penalty over the next two races will get Verstappen banned for a race for exceeding the 12-month limit for points. Kevin Magnussen was suspended for a race a season ago for points accumulation. Verstappen made four pit stops over the course of the Spanish Grand Prix and appeared to have a third-place car behind the McLarens of Piastri and Lando Norris. But the late restart and the penalty have put Verstappen at a huge disadvantage in the points standings. Piastri is now 10 points ahead of Norris in the drivers' standings and 49 points ahead of Verstappen as Verstappen goes for his fourth title in a row.

R-Truth released by WWE after 17-year stint: 'I want to thank WWE for the ride'New Foto - R-Truth released by WWE after 17-year stint: 'I want to thank WWE for the ride'

A beloved WWE star is no longer with the company. WWE has released veteran wrestler R-Truth, he announced on social media. "I'm sorry to inform you all. I just got released from WWE,"he said Sunday. "I want to thank WWE for the ride, but MOSTLY I want to thank each and EVERYONE OF YOU who was along for the ride, Thank you for all the love, support, and appreciation you have given me over the years. Thank you." Sean Ross Sapp of Fightfulreported R-Truth, whose legal name is Ron Killings, won't have his contract renewed with WWE. Im sorry to inform you all. I just got released from WWE. I want to thank WWE for the ride, but MOSTLY I want to thank each and EVERYONE OF YOU who was along for the ride, Thank you for all the love, support, and appreciation you have given me over the years. Thank you 🙏🏾 — Ron Killings (@RonKillings)June 1, 2025 The departure ends R-Truth's second stint in the company, which began in 2008. He had a two-year stint in WWE from 1999-2001, but he became a prominent star during his time with TNA Wrestling from 2002-07. Although he never won the WWE Championship, it was a memorable 17-year run for R-Truth. While he first connected with fans as he rapped his entrance music with the "what's up?" chant, he was known for being one of the best comedic wrestlers in the business, constantly bringing laughter to segments and making fellow talent break character on-air. He had his time with "Little Jimmy," an imaginary friend that he would consistently bring to life, confusing wrestlers with his presence. He also would get confused, such as when he cut a promo about being in the Money in the Bank match when he wasn't. In 2020, he went viral when he made Brock Lesnar laugh when he called out Paul Heyman. Other people he made break character include Roman Reigns, Dolph Ziggler and Randy Orton. His recent R-Truth's bit was getting wrestlers confused and trying to get himself in the good graces of others. In 2024, he tried to work his way into The Judgment Day despite pushback from the group. He even joined in on the group's celebration after WrestleMania 40. During that time, he would mistake people for other wrestlers, such as the continuous mixup between Tommaso Ciampa and Paul "Triple H" Levesque. There also was the all-time mixup of when he tried to enter the 2024 women's Royal Rumble match. Recently, he was involved in a storyline with his "childhood hero" John Cena, even though he's older than the WWE Champion. The 53-year-old faced Cena atSaturday Night's Main Event on May 24, and he again had fun when he copied Cena's look and entrance. Cena defeated him in what would be his last WWE match. R-Truth was a two-time United States Champion, two-time Hardcore Champion and two-time Tag Team Champion. However, the title he's most commonly associated with is the infamous 24/7 Championship, which could be challenged for in any setting. Whether it was during WWE shows or in segments posted on social media in several settings, he won and lost the title several times. He was a 53-time 24/7 Champion. The news of his departure comes afterWWE released 10 stars in Februaryand more in May. Several wrestlers shared their sadness with the announcement, including Rhea Ripley, who worked with him during The Judgment Day storyline. "In all seriousness, this is literally so heartbreaking… Thank you Truth,"she posted on social media. You're an amazing talent and an even better person. Go enjoy your life unc! — Ricochet (@KingRicochet)June 1, 2025 Thank you for everything and for always lightening up everyone's day 🙏🏽🥺 — Kelani Jordan (@kelani_wwe)June 1, 2025 I love@RonKillingsIt's guaranteed joy when he's a part of a segment.. He's also my dad's favorite WWE Superstar of all time. The McAfees are bummed aht but we all know R Truth will continue to bless the world with his BIG ass brain🗣🗣 THANK YOU TRUTHpic.twitter.com/ZswYMvQIzi — Pat McAfee (@PatMcAfeeShow)June 1, 2025 I love R-Truth so much! Track rage? Verstappen penalized for collision with Russell at Spanish GPNew Foto - Track rage? Verstappen penalized for collision with Russell at Spanish GP

MONTMELO, Spain (AP) — Max Verstappen dealt his Formula 1 title defense a self-inflicted blow at Sunday'sSpanish Grand Prixwhen he collided with George Russell's Mercedes, in a move which Russell later said appeared to be "deliberate." Verstappen had been ordered by his Red Bull team to cede position to Russell — in hopes of avoiding a minor penalty — after he had driven beyond the track limits so he could defend his position late in the race. The Dutchman slowed to let Russell pass, but as Russell did so Verstappen's car collided with the side of the Silver Arrow. Race stewards ruled that the "collision was undoubtedly caused by the actions" of Verstappen and slapped him with a 10-second penalty. That sent him tumbling down the race standings to 10th place, after he crossed the finish line fifth. "It felt very deliberate, to be honest," Russell told reporters. "It is something I have … never (seen) before in a Formula 1 race. "It is a bit of a shame because Max is clearly one of the best in the world, but maneuvers like that are totally unnecessary and let him down. And it is shame for the kids looking up and aspiring to be Formula One drivers." Tissue time Verstappen was unrepentant. "Next time I will bring a tissue," Verstappen replied when told about Russell's comment on him not being a good example for aspiring drivers. The four-time defending champion wouldn't go into what he thought happened, adding that Russell "has his view, I have my view." Other drivers commented on the incident. Lando Norris, who finished second behind McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri, was taken back by the move when he watched it on a video monitor while cooling down. "I've done that before ... on Mario Kart," Norris quipped, comparing the collision to the popularvideo gameof zany, action-packed racing. Verstappen undone by late safety car Verstappen was running third and looked to be in a strong position to at least challenge Norris for second place until Kimi Antonelli's Mercedes slid into the gravel and caused a safety car to come out. The McLarens went in quickly to get new, faster tires, but Verstappen had already made an extra pit stop and so didn't have any soft- or medium-compound tires left. So his team slapped on some hard-compound tires, which are slower and better for long runs, not the five laps remaining after the restart. Verstappen said he felt like a sitting duck and was quickly overtaken by Charles Leclerc in his Ferrari and then Russell. "I think up until then it was looking quite good for us," Verstappen said. "We didn't have, of course, the pace of the McLarens, but with that three stop, it still looked quite racy out there, putting them at least a little bit on the pressure in a way that they had to push." After taking just one point from the race, Verstappen was left 49 points adrift of Piastri in the overall standings. ___ AP auto racing:https://apnews.com/hub/auto-racing
