Spain's Carlos Alcaraz withstood a long opening set and a brief rally from American opponent Ben Shelton Sunday to earn a four-set victory and advance to the quarterfinals of the French Open in Paris. The World No. 2 prevailed in a 7-6 (8) marathon in one hour and seven minutes in the first set, then took two of the next three (6-3, 4-6, 6-4) to close things out against the 13th seed. "Today I fought against myself, against the mind," Alcaraz said. "I just tried to calm myself. In some moments I was mad, I was angry with myself. Talking not really good things but I am really happy to not let those thoughts play against me. I tried to calm myself down and I tried to keep going. That is what I tried." To wit, the pair combined for 90 unforced errors, 43 of those coming from Alcaraz. But he also saved seven of nine break points and had 43 winners, notching 31 points at the net in the three-hour, 22-minute win. "We have huge respect for each other," Alcaraz said of Shelton. "We played really good tennis and entertained the fans. He is a really powerful player, he can make any shot. I think we played really great tennis. Coming to the net, drop shots, forehands. For me it is great having Ben around. I think it is great energy for the people and I love watching Ben play." The French Open's defending champion is chasing his third win on clay this season, having previously won in Monte-Carlo and Rome. Alcaraz will next face another American in No. 12 seed Tommy Paul, who raced to a 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 victory over Australian No. 25 seed Alexei Popyrin. By advancing in Paris, Paul became the only active American to reach the quarters of three of the four majors (Australian Open 2023, Wimbledon 2024), and per the ATP, just the ninth American to ever pull off the feat. Previous quarterfinalists at three majors included Andre Agassi, Michael Chang, Jimmy Connors, Jim Courier, Vitas Gerulaitis, Brian Gottfried, John McEnroe and Pete Sampras. "I'm enjoying it a lot," Paul said. Despite enduring five aces by his opponent, Paul grabbed 27 winners and benefitted from 37 unforced errors by Popyrin. Paul was 9-for-10 on break points saved and 5-for-6 on break points converted, winning in a fast one hour and 52 minutes. "It was nice to get a straight-sets win today, give the body a little rest," Paul said. "I mean, as much as I love the five-setters, I definitely like the three-setters a little bit better. I am just excited for more matches." Paul became the first American to make the quarters at Roland Garros since Agassi in 2003. That drought was put to an even more emphatic end later in the day when No. 15 seed Frances Tiafoe also emerged with a win, defeating Germany's Daniel Altmaier 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (4). Tiafoe finished with 40 winners and had six aces without a double fault. Altmaier had three double faults and 33 unforced errors. Tiafoe's next opponent will be No. 8 seed Lorenzo Musetti of Italy, who clawed past No. 10 seed Holger Rune of Denmark 7-5, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. Rune piled up 50 winners but committed a whopping 55 unforced errors, 23 in the first set alone. Musetti went 6-for-8 in converting break points against Rune. --Field Level Media

Mets get homers from Alonso, Lindor and Soto to finish 3-game sweep with 5-3 win over RockiesNew Foto - Mets get homers from Alonso, Lindor and Soto to finish 3-game sweep with 5-3 win over Rockies

NEW YORK (AP) — Francisco Lindor once again homered in a victory and Clay Holmes threw a career-high seven innings Sunday as the New York Mets completed a three-game sweep of the Colorado Rockies with a 5-3 win. Pete Alonso hit a three-run shot and Juan Soto also went deep as the Mets won for the seventh time in eight games to finish a 7-2 homestand. They regained sole possession of first place in the NL East, moving a game ahead of Philadelphia. The Rockies lost their eighth straight and fell to 9-50, the worst record through 59 games of any major league team in the modern era (since 1901). They have been swept 10 times in 20 series — tied for the most sweeps through 20 series with the 1962 Mets, the 1970 Milwaukee Brewers and the 1994 Oakland Athletics. Alonso homered in the fourth before Lindor snapped a 3-all tie an inning later. The Mets have won the last 26 games in which Lindor has homered, the second-longest streak in big league history behind the 29-game run authored by Carl Furillo and the Brooklyn Dodgers from 1951-53. Soto connected in the eighth to make it 5-3. Holmes (5-3) gave up three hits — including Orlando Arcia's first-inning solo homer and Tyler Freeman's two-run shot in the fifth. He struck out three and walked none. The right-hander, who entered this season with 300 consecutive relief appearances dating to 2019, has lasted at least six innings in six of his last eight starts. Reed Garrett and Edwin Díaz tossed a scoreless inning apiece, with Díaz earning his 13th save. Rockies rookie Carson Palmquist (0-3) gave up four runs in 4 2/3 innings but struck out eight — two more than he'd fanned in his first three starts combined. Key moment Lindor's homer came just after Freeman's tying shot in the fifth. Key stat The Rockies haven't held a lead at the end of consecutive innings since they led for the final four innings of their most recent win, a 3-2 victory over the New York Yankees on May 23. Up next Rockies RHP Germán Márquez (1-7, 7.13 ERA) starts Monday in Miami against RHP Max Meyer (3-4, 4.53). Mets RHP Paul Blackburn is scheduled to make his season debut Monday night at Dodger Stadium in the opener of a four-game series. Blackburn has been rehabbing from right knee inflammation. ___ AP MLB:https://apnews.com/hub/mlb

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Andrew McCutchen tied Roberto Clemente for third place on the Pittsburgh Pirates' all-time home run list at 240 with a two-run shot off San Diego's Randy Vásquez in the third inning on Sunday. It was the second homer in two games and fifth of the season for the 38-year-old McCutchen, who's in his 17th big league season and 12th with Pittsburgh over two stints. It gave the Pirates a 2-1 lead. Clemente hit 240 homers from 1955-1972. He was 38 when he was killed on Dec. 31, 1972, in the crash of a plane he chartered to deliver emergency supplies for the survivors of an earthquake in Nicaragua. He was posthumously elected to the Hall of Fame in 1973. Willie Stargell tops the Pirates' list with 475 homers and Ralph Kiner is next with 301. McCutchen has 324 homers in a career in which he's also played for Philadelphia, Milwaukee, San Francisco and the New York Yankees. ___ AP MLB:https://apnews.com/hub/mlb
