CHICAGO (AP) — Drew Pomeranz, Ben Brown, Brad Keller and Daniel Palencia combined on a one-hitter, and the Chicago Cubs beat the Cincinnati Reds 2-0 on Saturday. Chicago used Pomeranz as an opener in front of Brown, and the strategy worked on a cool, blustery afternoon at Wrigley Field. Pomeranz pitched a 1-2-3 first before Brown struck out nine in six dominant innings for the NL Central leaders. The Cubs scored their two runs in the eighth. Seiya Suzuki's flyball to right off Graham Ashcraft (3-4) was misplayed by Will Benson, and it landed in fair territory for an RBI double. Dansby Swanson drove in Kyle Tucker when he beat out a grounder to shortstop Elly De La Cruz for a two-out infield single. Keller (2-0) worked the eighth and Palencia handled the ninth for his fifth save. It was Chicago's sixth shutout of the season. Cincinnati wasted a sharp performance by Nick Lodolo, who pitched six innings of five-hit ball. The 6-foot-6 Brown retired 14 of his first 15 batters before TJ Friedl singled with two out in the sixth for Cincinnati's only hit of the game. Brown had a 9.90 ERA in the first inning over his first 10 starts of the season. He was tagged for eight runs and seven hits in 4 1/3 innings in his previous start Sunday at Cincinnati. Key moment Cubs center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong robbed Friedl with an impressive diving catch for the second out of the ninth. Key stat It was Pomeranz's first start since Aug. 7, 2019, for Milwaukee at Pittsburgh. The left-hander has pitched 13 2/3 scoreless innings in 15 appearances since he was acquired in anApril tradewith Seattle. Up next Reds right-hander Nick Martinez (3-5, 3.48 ERA) and Cubs right-hander Jameson Taillon (4-3, 3.86 ERA) take the mound on Sunday for the series finale. ___ AP MLB:https://apnews.com/MLB

Stars goalie Oettinger surprised, embarrassed by pull in West final that DeBoer is still explainingNew Foto - Stars goalie Oettinger surprised, embarrassed by pull in West final that DeBoer is still explaining

FRISCO, Texas (AP) — Dallas Stars goalie Jake Oettinger said Saturday that he was surprised and embarrassed when he got pulled from Game 5 of the Western Conference final after giving up two goals on the only two shots he faced, and coach Pete DeBoer was still facing questions about that decision two days after theseason-ending lossto Edmonton. "No one's a bigger fan of Jake Oettinger than me, as a person or a goalie," DeBoer said. "There's one motive, and that's how do we survive this and get it to a Game 6. And I have to live with those consequences. If it works, great, we're in Edmonton tonight and you guys are telling me how awesome a move it was. And when it doesn't, I've got to stand up here and do this, and I understand." Instead of a Game 6 in Edmonton on Saturday, the Stars had their season-ending availability in North Texas. Oettinger was pulled only 7:09 into Game 5 at home Thursday night after Mattias Janmark's goal put Edmonton up 2-0. The Oilers scored again less than a minute after Casey DeSmith took over on the way to a6-3 winthat set up a Stanley Cup Finalrematch against Florida, though Dallas got within 4-3 a minute into the third period. "The reality is if I make one or two of those saves, then I'm still playing in the game," Oettinger said in his first public comments since. "The way I'm looking at it is, how can I get better from that? How can I can make those saves that I made all playoffs?" The 26-year-old goalie has been to the playoffs in four consecutive seasons and won six postseason series. That stretch began in 2022, when Dallas took top-seeded Calgary to a Game 7, andOettinger had 64 savesbefore Johnny Gaudreau's OT goal ended the first-round series. Oettinger had a .905 save percentage and 2.82 goals-against average while facing 503 shots in 18 games this postseason, by far the most of any goalie. Florida's Sergei Bobrovsky, in one fewer game, has faced 408 shots and the next-highest total is 292. Oettinger had a .909 save percentage and 2.59 GAA in 58 regular-season games. When DeBoer was asked Saturday about his conversations with Oettinger since the season ended, the coach said they hadn't had the opportunity yet to have one. Oettingerwas later asked if he had any concerns about their relationship, and he responded by saying the whole experience is something he would learn from and that was going to help him grow to be a better person and goalie. "My job is to stop the puck. And I feel like I'm one of the best in the world when I'm playing well doing that. So that's all I'm in a focus on," Oettinger said. "All the extra stuff is just extra stuff to me. ... If I go out there next year and I'm the best goalie in the world, it doesn't matter. One of you guys could be coaching, it doesn't matter. Just try to be the best I can be, learn from the experience." It was the third season in a row the Stars lost in the West final, and Edmonton also knocked them out last year. The Oilers finished the 2024 series with three wins in a row, and this time won the last four after Dallas won the opener. DeBoer said there had been discussions among the coaching staff before Game 4 at Edmonton about whether Oettinger maybe needed a break, and that the goalie had dealt with some upper respiratory issues during the series. While that didn't happen then, it was at least part of thequick in-game switchon Thursday, along with the recent playoff record against the Oilers. "When you're in that moment, you're making that decision, what's going through my mind is, you know, we need to stop the bleeding here. Our team looked tentative. We're down 2-0," DeBoer said. "In the back of your mind, you know, is he a little bit fatigued, he's been through a lot. He's carried us through two rounds, is he going to be a better goalie in Game 6 and 7 for us fresh." Oettinger said he felt great physically — "as healthy as I've ever felt" — and felt like he could have played 40 more games. But he did acknowledge the potential mental grind of another long season. ___ AP NHL playoffs:https://apnews.com/hub/stanley-cupandhttps://apnews.com/hub/nhl

TORONTO (AP) — Blue Jays center fielder Daulton Varsho left Toronto's game against the Athletics on Saturday with an apparent left leg injury in the third inning. Varsho grabbed the back of his thigh after rounding second base on his base hit off the wall in left-center, hopped a few steps and fell near third base as he was tagged out by third baseman Max Schuemann. Athletic trainers tended to Varsho on the field and he was able to slowly walk off under his own power. Myles Straw replaced him. Munich lucky again for first-time winners as PSG finally seizes Champions LeagueNew Foto - Munich lucky again for first-time winners as PSG finally seizes Champions League

MUNICH (AP) — Munich magic struck again as Paris Saint-Germain became the fifth first-time winner of the European Cup or Champions League in the city. PSG routed Inter Milan 5-0in Bayern Munich's home stadium, Allianz Arena, on Saturday, becoming the competition's 24th winner since the first, Real Madrid, in 1956. Each of the previous four finals in Munich also produced first-time winners — Nottingham Forest in 1979, Marseille in 1993, Borussia Dortmund in 1997, and Chelsea in 2012. PSG had been striving for years to win Europe's premier club competition with an array of expensively assembled stars such as Neymar, Kylian Mbappé and Lionel Messi. It went close in 2020 when it lost the final to Bayern in Lisbon. French teenager Désiré Doué starred on Saturday by scoring twice after setting up the opening goal for Achraf Hakimi, who didn't celebrate after scoring against his former team. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and 19-year-old substitute Senny Mayulu completed the rout for the biggest winning margin in a Champions League final. ___ AP soccer:https://apnews.com/hub/soccer

Astros find fracture in Yordan Alvarez's right hand, delaying slugger's return from ILNew Foto - Astros find fracture in Yordan Alvarez's right hand, delaying slugger's return from IL

TheHouston Astroshoped sluggerYordan Alvarezmight be activated from the injured list this weekend. However, he'll be sidelined for a longer period after imaging exams found a fracture in his right hand that was originally diagnosed as inflammation. Alvarez, 27, was placed on the IL on May 5 (retroactive to May 3) withright hand inflammation. That was believed to be a factor in a subpar season during which the three-time All-Star is batting only .210/.306/.340 with 3 home runs, 4 doubles and 18 RBI. Those numbers are far below his career .295/.387/.573 average with four consecutive seasons of 31 or more homers. After Alvarez took batting practice against two minor league pitchers on Friday, the Astros were encouraged enough to believe he might return to the lineup. "It went really well,"Astros manager Joe Espadatold reporters. "He hit some balls out of the ballpark, he hit some balls the other way. He said he felt good, so we'll see where this takes us. I think this is a step in the right direction." However, Alvarez said he still felt discomfort in the hand, so the Astros sent him for further imaging. The fracture was then discovered. Astros general manager Dana Brown said the fracture was "60 percent healed," but Alvarez would be shut down from hitting as a result. Only after the inflammation subsided could the break be seen. "Obviously I was very excited,"Alvarez said to reportersthrough a translator. "I thought that was going to be the avenue for my return. But I was uncomfortable and wasn't feeling good. And that's where we took the decision." Yordan on his injury update.#BuiltForThispic.twitter.com/jPyxwDfIfV — SportsTalk 790 (@SportsTalk790)May 31, 2025 The seven-year veteran added that trying to play through the injury may have caused further damage, including the fracture. Alvarez's diminished performance and subsequent absence has hurt the Astros' production at designated hitter and left field, the two positions he typically plays during a season. Houston has gotten a .239/.309/.383 average with 7 home runs and 25 RBI from the DH spot and a .233/.293/.353 line with 6 homers and 23 RBI from left field. Without Alvarez, the Astros have gone 15-11 and managedto take first placein the American League West, holding a half-game lead over theSeattle Marinersgoing into Saturday's MLB schedule.

Not everyone is a fan of Cubs pitcher Shota Imanaga's long hairNew Foto - Not everyone is a fan of Cubs pitcher Shota Imanaga's long hair

CHICAGO — Last year, Chicago Cubs pitcher Shota Imanaga wowed fans when he took the mound at Wrigley Field for Chicago's home opener before going on to have a stellar season — Imanaga's first in the majors. The pitcher, also known as the "Throwing Philosopher," went 15-3 for the Cubs in 2024, racking up 174 strikeouts to go along with a 2.91 ERA. The 31-year-old had previously played professionally in Japan from 2016 to 2023. In the States, Imanaga soon became a fan favorite not only for how well he pitched, but also for his charisma, sense of humor, and his long, flowing hair. Watch "NBC Nightly News" tonight at 6:30 p.m. ET/5:30 p.m. CT. "You're saying I have the best hair?" a laughing Imanaga told NBC News through a translator when asked about his free-flowing locks. "My teammates, if I'm drying my hair, if I'm combing my hair, they compliment me, telling me I have beautiful hair," Imanaga said. "But my mom and my friends are like, it's probably time to cut your hair." It's not only the hair that's helped Imanaga endear himself to the Wrigley faithful. During his rookie year, the pitcher decided on "Chelsea Dagger" as his walk-up song, a tune more famously known in Chicago as the goal song for the NHL's Blackhawks, dating back well over a decade to the hockey team's heyday. "When I first got to the Cubs, I think a lot of the fans were, 'Who is this pitcher?'" Imanaga said. "And so for me, it was really important to get acclimated with the team, with the fans. What was important was to pick something that all the Chicago fans love." Imanaga's countryman, outfielder Seiya Suzuki, employs a similar ethos when asked about his favorite ballpark food, saying he would have to go with hot dogs, "especially" considering the team he plays for. Suzuki joined the Cubs in 2022 after a nine-year career in Japan, and he and Imanaga have since played key roles in helping turn around the team's fortunes. After back-to-back losing seasons, Chicago posted two winning records in each of the last two years. Suzuki and Imanaga have become global stars in the process and are part of agrowing Japanese presence in Major League Baseball. In April, the Cubs opened the season in Tokyo against the Los Angeles Dodgers, who feature three Japanese-born players in Shohei Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Roki Sasaki. "When I was younger, I watched baseball in the U.S., and I thought it was really cool," Suzuki said. "So if when I'm playing and the fans in Japan, even if it's one extra person gets to watch, and they want to come to the U.S. to enjoy baseball or something like that, I think that'd be great." While both Suzuki and Imanaga have pushed the right buttons with their home fans, Chicago's current objective is to get Imanaga back on the mound. He hasn't started a game since May 4, when he left a start against the Brewers with a hamstring injury. The Cubs placed Imanaga, whose jersey is the team's most popular this season, on the 15-day injured list the next day. He's currently progressing toward a return in early June, ramping up his rehab with some bullpen work. Chicago is currently first in the NL Central.
