Evander Kane's physicality helps Oilers push Golden Knights to brink of eliminationNew Foto - Evander Kane's physicality helps Oilers push Golden Knights to brink of elimination

This isn't the first time Evander Kane has been a pain to the Golden Knights, and he has helped bring a physicality to the Edmonton Oilers that has them one game from eliminating Vegas. It's similar in the Florida-Toronto series, where the heat is rising as the stakes get higher. In other words, it's theNHL playoffs. For the Golden Knights, this is like a throwback — but not in a good way. Former Vegas enforcer Ryan Reaves had a long-running feud with Kane when the latter played for San Jose, which helped bleed into contempt between the teams. The fact they were Pacific Division rivals that also met in the playoffs in 2018 and 2019 took their games up a level. The Golden Knights won the 2018 series and the Sharks got revenge in a memorable seven-game victory the following year. So, of course, Kane is playing another big role role against the Golden Knights. He has two goals and two assists and has helped bring a key physical element to the Oilers, especially inMonday night's 3-0 Game 4 victory. "It wears other teams down and it keeps guys on their toes," Kane said of the physicality. "We got some turnovers off of that. I thought we were able to create some offensive opportunities. We didn't take our foot off the gas." Kane missed the entire regular season because of two surgeries to repair a number of issues, but hasn't needed much time to transition his way back into the lineup. "He likes the competition," Edmonton coach Kris Knoblauch said. "He likes the level of intensity, and the game means more this time of the year. He rises to that occasion where you see other guys maybe wilt." The Florida-Toronto series is tied — and heated. The Maple Leafs won Games 1 and 2 on their home ice, the Panthers won Games 3 and 4 on their home ice, and that span has seen both good play and bad blood. The Panthers are waiting to see if forward Evan Rodrigues — the recipient of a high hit from former teammate Oliver Ekman-Larsson in Game 4 — will be cleared to play in Game 5. That wasn't the end of the Game 4 shenanigans, either. Toronto's Max Domi appeared to blindside the Panthers' Aleksander Barkov with a hit at the end of regulation that led to four misconduct penalties, along with a suggestion from Florida's Matthew Tkachuk to the Leafs' William Nylander that a response would be coming from the defending Cup champions on Wednesday. "He probably didn't even hear him," Leafs coach Craig Berube said of Nylander. "He doesn't hear me." Edmonton Oilers at Vegas Golden Knights When/Where to Watch: Game 5, Wednesday, 9:30 p.m. EDT (ESPN) Series: Oilers leads 3-1 Edmonton goalie Stuart Skinner was benched after the first two games in the opening round series against Los Angeles before Calvin Pickard came to rescue before reeling off six consecutive victories. That included the first two games of this series. But with Pickard day to day with a lower-body injury, it's Skinner's turn to play hero. He recorded a 23-save shutout on Monday to put the Oilers on the brink of advancing to the Western Conference final. "Stuart made some big saves, especially early in the game when there were some times Vegas had the opportunity to get back in the game," Knoblauch said. "He has a lot of pride. He puts pressure on himself to have success, and it was nice to see him get that shutout." Florida Panthers at Toronto Maple Leafs When/Where to Watch: Game 5, Wednesday, 7 p.m. EDT (ESPN) Series: Series tied 2-2. The series is tied. Games, 2-2. Goals, Florida leads 14-13. The Panthers are delivering more hits, the Maple Leafs are blocking more shots. Add hits and blocks up, and it comes out basically even — 60 a game for Toronto, 59 a game for Florida. "It's a best-of-three now," Panthers goalie Sergei Bobrovsky said. Welcome to the swing game. In NHL history, when a best-of-seven series is tied 2-2, the Game 5 winner has gone on to prevail 79% of the time. That goes up to 100% so far this postseason; four series were tied 2-2, and the Game 5 winner has won them all — all in Round 1 in the Western Conference. The Vegas-Minnesota, Edmonton-Los Angeles, Winnipeg-St. Louis and Dallas-Colorado series were all tied 2-2; Vegas, Edmonton and Dallas all won Game 5 and closed those matchups out in six games, while Winnipeg won Game 5 and went on to win Game 7 in an overtime thriller. Maple Leafs goalie Anthony Stolarz, who was injured in Game 1 of the series, returned to practice Tuesday. Berube, however, said he didn't know when Stolarz would play again. ___ AP Sports Writer Tim Reynolds contributed to this report. ___ AP NHL playoffs:https://apnews.com/hub/stanley-cupandhttps://apnews.com/hub/nhl

Michael Strahan Explains Why He 'Cannot Fathom' Ever Competing on "Dancing with the Stars"

Jeff Kravitz/FilmMagic Michael Strahanisn't ready to throw his hat in the ring for the mirrorball trophy. On the May 13 episode ofGood Morning America, Strahan, 53, shut down the possibility of competing onDancing with the Starswhile interviewing the show's co-hostAlfonso Ribeiro. The moment happened after Strahan's co-hostLara Spencerasked Ribeiro, 53, if there's anyone from "the sports world" who he would like to see on the upcoming season of the ABC competition series while pointing to the former NFL star. Strahan then interrupted, "Don't be pointing at me." "I think, listen, if there was a guy. I think if he played for the Giants at one point in his life. You know, he'd bring the whole New York audience, right?" Ribeiro teased before Strahan briefly showed his dance moves. "That's as much as you're getting," the former defensive end said, to which Ribeiro responded, "We need you, buddy. We'll get you a tall dancer to dance with you so it won't look so awkward." "You know what I love aboutDancing with the Stars?" Strahan asked. "When they come here, and I just get to interview them, and I don't have to dance. That's the best part." "My joints are too old and brittle," Strahan joked. However, Ribeiro noted taking part in the show could be a perfect fit with his schedule as he's already in Los Angeles for his job as an analyst on Fox NFL Sunday. Kevin Mazur/Getty; Noam Galai/Getty "Listen, you come out there anyway," he said. "You're there on the weekend. You just stay a few extra days." Strahan made it clear that he won't be putting on his dance shoes anytime soon, saying, "This is the thing; this is what scared me. Every professional football player and athlete who has been on the show said it was the hardest thing they've ever done. If it was harder than football was for me, I cannot fathom it at this point in my life." Ribeiro then suggested that "some of those athletes" might not have been "giving their all in football," adding, "I can't say for certain, but maybe they didn't step up." "There were Football Hall of Famers in that group," Strahan noted. He then suggested another member of theGood Morning Americafamily for the dance competition, saying, "George [Stephanopoulos] would do it, though. I have to say." Michael Penix Jr. among 5 second-year players expected to make a big splash in 2025 NFL seasonNew Foto - Michael Penix Jr. among 5 second-year players expected to make a big splash in 2025 NFL season

Now that the general framework is set for each NFL team's roster, it's time to take a look at who will be leading the charge for their respective franchise. Some teams will be hoping for their second-year players to take huge leaps after investing big-time draft capital in them. Here are a few sophomore players, including two on the same team, who are carrying a huge load for their club and will be a driving force of success or failure. The Falcons put a ton of pressure on the back of their second-year quarterback by trading a future first-round draft pick for pass rusher James Pearce Jr. at the end of last month's first round. Now that the Rams own that first-round pick for 2026, it's imperative that the Falcons get off to a fast start in 2025 and find a way to make the playoffs for the first time since the 2017 season. That likely doesn't happen without somewhat of a breakout season from Penix, who started three games toward the end of the season following the benching ofKirk Cousins, who is somehow still on the roster. Atlanta's defense may be a huge work in progress but the offense has enough talent to give Penix a chance at success. Penix's three games showed the same traits that he had at the University of Washington: big arm for big throws downfield, but accuracy was a bit hit or miss. If the offensive line can continue its stretch of good health from last season, the structure for success is there, which the Falcons will need because this team doesn't want to find itself in a spot where it's handing the Rams a top pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. The blueprint of the current regime relies on Penix's success, which is a daunting place to be in the first full season as the team's starting quarterback. There's already proof of concept with this Vikings team.Sam Darnold, formerly a journeyman quarterback who didn't live up to his top draft pick billing, led one of the best offenses in the NFL last season and the Vikings were one of the best teams in the NFL. Darnold is gone, leaving McCarthy to take over as the starter after missing all of last year with a meniscus tear. The framework for the offense is already here:Justin JeffersonandJordan Addisonare arguably the best 1-2 punch at wide receiver in the league and the Vikings revamped their offensive line with the additions ofRyan Kelly,Will Friesand rookie Donovan Jackson. Head coach Kevin O'Connell is already proven as one of the best offensive coaches of this era, so McCarthy is in a favorable situation. The only unfavorable piece is a team that's ready to make the playoffs now and the pressure that comes with that. The Vikings have reiterated that McCarthy is their starter and he'll have all these chances in the world to prove he can be the guy. The "other" first-round draft pick for the Vikings from 2024 was Turner, who was drafted with the idea of giving defensive mastermind Brian Flores a pass rusher he can count on in tough spots. However, Turner had a quiet rookie season, notching three sacks without a high snap count in Year 1.Andrew Van GinkelandJonathan Greenardplayed more than well enough to keep Turner on the bench, but he has room to improve. If he can, the Vikings should have one of the toughest defenses in the league again. They put a lot of draft capital into last year's first round, now it's time for those players to make their impact on the team. Pearsall was drafted to be one of the core pieces of the 49ers' passing game and he'll get a chance to prove his skills immediately.Deebo Samuelwas shipped off to Washington andBrandon Aiyukis coming off of a torn ACL, leaving Pearsall as a player the Niners are going to lean on heavily to start things off in 2025. Over the final three games, in which Pearsall played at least 70% of the snaps in every game, he totaled 18 catches for 247 yards and two touchdowns — which would extrapolate to a 1,400-yard, 11-touchdown season if he could keep that pace up for a full 17 game season. Pearsall has a lot of talent to tap into this season and it'll be fascinating to see how head coach Kyle Shanahan deploys him after a healthy offseason of working together. The flashes are there, Pearsall just needs to consistently deliver. Fautanu had a stroke of bad luck by dislocating his knee during a non-contact incident in practice. He still has big expectations upon him as a former first-round draft pick. The Steelers, with or withoutAaron Rodgers, are going to be a team that heavily relies upon running the ball and that won't be possible unless Pittsburgh's offensive line is at full strength. Fautanu was one of multiple offensive linemen the Steelers drafted last year and they got a big hit in centerZach Frazier. If Fautanu can stabilize this offensive line and give way to a running game that's capable of being productive instead of just leaned on, the Steelers will have a pathway toward finally winning a playoff game despite their potential passing game woes.

Bill Belichick: Jordon Hudson 'doesn't have anything to do with UNC football'New Foto - Bill Belichick: Jordon Hudson 'doesn't have anything to do with UNC football'

Bill Belichick said Tuesday that girlfriend Jordon Hudson "doesn't have anything to do" with the North Carolina football program. The 73-year-old coach appeared on ESPN's "SportsCenter" and was asked about his relationship with the 24-year-old Hudson and if it had any potential impacts as he begins his first season as a college football head coach. "It's really off to the side," Belichick said. "It's a personal relationship and she doesn't have anything to do with UNC football. I'm excited to be back in the coaching meetings and getting ready for June and then August when we get to training camp. June will be a big recruiting month for us and then August we'll start getting ready for the season." Belichick was then asked if his relationship with the much younger Hudson has come up in discussions with his players — who have assuredly seen discussion about the two on social media — and the longtime Patriots coach adeptly deflected. "Great, again we want to make the players the best that they can be and provide them the best opportunity on and off the field," Belichick said. During an interview with "CBS Sunday Morning," Hudson stepped in to say that Belichick would not be answering a question about how the two met. Per a TMZ report after the interview aired, it wasn't the only time that Hudson had chimed in during the interview. The two have said they met on a flight to Palm Beach in 2021 andin a statement days after the interview, Belichick confirmed that the two have a "personal and professional relationship" and that she was "simply doing her job to ensure the interview stayed on track." Over the weekend she finished third at the Miss Maine USA pageant with Belichick in attendance. The competition began a day after North Carolina said in a statement thatHudson was still welcome at its football facilitiesfollowing a report that she had been banned. Belichick's answer Tuesday also contradicts what his school email account revealed earlier this spring. In an email to a UNC associate athletic director for communications, sent just days after he was officially introduced at North Carolina, Belichick wrote that "I am including Jordon on this email so she can also keep up with our postings. Can you include her on anything you send to me?" Hudson also instructed the schoolon how it should announce Belichick's son Steve as the team's new defensive coordinator when he was hired in March. "It can be easily misinterpreted that Steve is simply benefitting from nepotism but that is not the case," Hudson wrote. "Steve was fortunate to have learned defensive football strategy from the 'greatest defensive mind' of all-time. He has earned his position due to his performance and output." Hudson also asked North Carolina to block or hide social media messages on the school's page that were "slanderous commentary" about their relationship.

U.S. Soccer on Tuesday revealed two brand new kits for theU.S. women'sandmen's national teams, both of which involved design input from players. In a press release accompanying the kit reveal, U.S. Soccer said that Nike athletes Kellyn Acosta, Lynn Biyendolo, Naomi Girma, Sophia Wilson, DeAndre Yedlin, and Walker Zimmerman — each of whom has dozens of USWNT or USMNT caps — were involved in designing the kits, dubbed "Brilliant" and "Heartbeat," respectively. The "Brilliant" kit is a USWNT-only edition, honoring the 40th anniversary of the women's program. It features a star-based pattern, and will carry four stars above the U.S. Soccer crest to commemorate the team's four World Cup triumphs. "To me, the kits represent the USWNT mentality of always pushing forward," said Biyendolo, who helped the USWNT to a gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics, via press release. "I know I can speak for my teammates when I say that every time we put on the uniform, it brings a great sense of pride. When we represent our country, our team and ourselves, we know we are doing so while standing on the shoulders of giants. The 'Brilliant' kit is just another way to honor our past and the women who played before us."
